Abstract

In May 2018, the Faculty of Philology of the University of Santiago de Compostela hosted the symposium “Cidadanía e Identidade. Expresións políticas, económicas e culturais no século XXI”, promoted by the Research Centre for Emerging Cultural Processes and Practices (CIPPCE), a meeting in which institutional representatives and research staff from different areas of knowledge approached the public space of the city and the condition of citizenship from multiple perspectives, a choral vision that evidenced the ambivalent character of the city and the nature of the relations between citizenship and identity. The fruitful exchange of proposals, ideas and reflections expressed at the event motivated this 6th issue of Cadernos CIPPCE de Emerxencia Cultural to delve deeper into the complex binomial citizenship-identity, while incorporating new interventions and amplifying the analytical views on the subject. The collection of works highlights the functions and transformations of cities which, in today’s unstable world, make it increasingly impossible to determine the identity traits necessary for community cohesion.
